The abundance of personal mobile devices has changed consumer expectations about access to information. We hope to find more information about the products always and everywhere. And we are so likely to get that information from some sort of social network like we go straight to a company’s website. I was a panelist during the Friday what’s Next, sponsored by the Bangor Daily News, on the same question. Companies want to know if they need a mobile application to reach their customers, or if a website optimized for mobile (sensitive) is an adequate starting point. With that advice in mind, I try to determine how they will judge the possible application of your business and make it a viable plan you can afford.
So what can an application make for your business? Even determining the question starts with how you think about what you do with your business. Unlike the app stores, whose applications are their “product” applications, a company is more likely to “extensions” their products more efficiently to deliver goods and services available.
This begins to achieve 101 application of thought: the execution is the visible evidence of certain data and / or content. It is one of the many front-ends possible information about the “back-end”. So the starting point of the discussion is not “need an application?” But “What I want to show, transform and / or retrieve data from a mobile device?”
So we started with a strategic concept, something great image that we can do to achieve our business goals. If the consultants are honest – and listen to them – they can do a reality check on the originality of your idea of application and value the existing data to support it. What types of advisors you are looking for, has a lot to do with what kind of application you think and what your internal resources and budgets are. (Note, “it depends!”) It’s tempting to think that you can go directly to a designer who can show you how you look, but probably jump the gun.
Between a goal and finding the data to support it, and launching a successful, effective application, there is an important tactical step that can be overlooked. Its application not only the necessary data, it needs the specific data bits, transformed into specific formats and updated with some frequency. Even if you decide to go with a “constructor” platform, you still need to involve people who know what they’re doing.
